An Interactive Road Map to the Future of Concrete Pavement

Help shape the future of concrete pavement by participating in the research, technology transfer, and other activities offered through the Concrete Pavement (CP) Road Map initiative. The goal of the Road Map is to achieve by 2015 a comprehensive, integrated, and fully functional system of concrete pavement technologies that provides innovative solutions for customer-driven performance requirements.

Released in 2005, the Road Map was sponsored by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and developed by a team led by Iowa State University. More than 400 stakeholders participated in brainstorming sessions that outlined critical needs and research priorities in the areas of mixtures and materials, design, construction, and pavement management. The resulting Road Map details 12 research tracks, each with specific goals and mechanisms for developing new products and systems.

The Road Map provides a collaborative structure for existing local, State, and national concrete pavement research programs to focus their investments on stakeholder-identified priorities, enabling transportation agencies and others in the highway community to achieve common research objectives more cost effectively.

The Road Map activities are supported by a 4-year FHWA pooled fund study, “CP Road Map Operations Support,” which was launched in 2007. The pooled fund enables operational support for the Road Map initiatives to be provided by the National Concrete Pavement Technology Center at Iowa State University. For more information about joining the pooled fund, visit www.pooledfund.org (search under Study No. TPF-5(185)).

To learn more about the Road Map and the research that is underway, visit the CP Road Map interactive Web site at www.cproadmap.org. The materials on the Web site and the operations support group staff at the National Concrete Pavement Technology Center can assist in educating your agency’s staff and decisionmakers about the goals of the Road Map. The support group staff can also assist in developing an action plan to ensure that your agency’s concrete pavement research program benefits from the Road Map initiative.
