In Brief…

In order to better serve the customers of its Local Technical Assistance Program (LTAP) centers, FHWA recently mailed out surveys to more than 2,000 local and tribal transportation agencies. The survey covers such topics as benefits gained from participating in the LTAP centers' training programs, the most important transportation-related subjects for training, and any factors that may limit use of the centers' services. FHWA plans to do a follow-up survey in a few years. For more information, contact Nelda Bravo at FHWA, 708-283-3528 (fax: 708-283-3501; email: nelda.bravo@fhwa.dot.gov).

A new CD-ROM scheduled to be released in March by FHWA will contain guidelines on pavement preservation from the departments of transportation in California, Michigan, Minnesota, and Ohio. In the guidelines, these four States share the best practices that have resulted from their considerable experience with corrective and preventive maintenance activities and pavement preservation programs. To order a copy contact Bob Davies at FHWA, 202-366-2023 (fax: 202-366-9981; email: robert.davies@fhwa.dot.gov), or contact your local FHWA Division Office.

FHWA is in the process of completing the first major revision of the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) in over 20 years. The manual contains standards and guidance for the design and use of signs, pavement markings, traffic signals, and other traffic control devices. FHWA has published the proposed MUTCD amendments in the Federal Register for public comment. Public comments must be received by June 2000. The proposed amendments can be found on the MUTCD home page at www.mutcd.fhwa.dot.gov. For more information, contact Linda Brown at FHWA, 202-366-2192 (fax: 202-366-8712).
