Four new publications from the long-term pavement performance (LTPP)
program provide readers with information on the latest applications
of LTPP data. The publication of the TechBrief, Help with Converting
Pavement Smoothness Specifications (Publication No. FHWA-RD-02-112),
is intended to assist highway agencies with converting the International
Roughness Index (IRI) or the Profile Index (PI) to the new specifications
of the PI. A second report, Pavement Smoothness Index Relationships:
Final Report (Publication No. FHWA-RD-
02-057),
documents a series of relationships between IRI and PI that can help
States in transitioning their smoothness specifications for hot-mix
asphalt and portland cement concrete. The LTPP report, Study of LTPP
Laboratory Resilient Modulus Test Data and Response Characteristics,
Final Report, October 2002 (Publication No. FHWA-RD-02-051),
provides the first comprehensive review and evaluation of the resilient
modulus test data measured on pavements materials and soils recovered
from the LTPP test sections. And finally, the report, Back-Calculation
of Layer Parameters for LTPP Test Sections, Volume II: Layered Elastic
Analysis for Flexible and Rigid Pavements, October 2002 (Publication
No. FHWA-RD-01-113),
looks at the methods used in back-calculating the layered elastic properties
from deflection basin measurements for certain LTPP test sections and
provides recommendations for these methods. All reports can be found in the LTPP pavement publication page.

Do you have a question about traffic control devices? Look no further:
FHWA's new Peer-to-Peer Program on Traffic Control Devices (P2P TCD)
is your one-stop shop for answers. The program is assembling a network
of volunteers from across the country who possess expertise in specific
areas related to traffic control devices, and who can assist local,
county, regional, and State representatives with any questions they
may have.
The P2P TCD program is free and easy to use. You can request assistance
by contacting the program at P2P@fhwa.dot.gov
or toll-free at 888-700-PEER (7337). The program coordinator will select
a peer from the volunteer database who is able to answer your particular
question, and the volunteer will then contact you directly. Some of
the issues that P2P TCD can address include:
- How to apply work zone devices and typical applications of the
devices.
- How to provide traffic control devices for persons with disabilities.
- Application of raised pavement markings.
- Proper signage application for unique locations.
