Working at the Speed of Night

A photo advertising the 2006 National Work Zone Awareness Week and also contains photos of workers working at night.National Work Zone Awareness Week (NWZAW) 2006, April 3-9, will focus on the dangers faced by highway workers "Working at the Speed of Night," as more transportation departments perform construction and maintenance activities during evening hours. The week will kick off with a media event in Washington, DC, on April 4. NWZAW 2006 aims to raise awareness of the hazards of nighttime construction work and the need for caution when traveling through work zones. In 2004, 1,068 people were killed in motor vehicle crashes in work zones.

NWZAW was established in 1999 by the American Traffic Safety Services Association (ATSSA), American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials, and the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA).

For more information about NWZAW 2006, contact James Baron at ATSSA, 800-272-8772, ext. 113 (email: JimB@atssa.com), or Guan Xu at FHWA, 202-366-5892 (email: guan.xu@fhwa.dot.gov). Information is also available at http://www.atssa.com (click on "News and PR," and then select "National Work Zone Awareness Week"). For more information on work zone safety, visit the National Work Zone Safety Information Clearinghouse at wzsafety.tamu.edu.
