Honoring the Best in Highway Design

The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) is now accepting nominations for its biennial Excellence in Highway Design Awards Program. The awards honor outstanding examples of highways, bridges, pedestrian facilities, roadside facilities, and other facets of highway design. These roadways, structures, and other facilities provide safety and mobility while being sensitive to the surrounding environment and contributing to a more aesthetically pleasing highway experience.

Two new award categories added this year, "Project Development Process" and "Project Management," will recognize innovative approaches agencies are using to develop and design highway improvements using context sensitive solutions. Awards will also be presented in the categories of:

  • The Urban Highway.
  • The Rural Highway.
  • Major Highway Structures (Over $15 Million).
  • Major Highway Structures (Under $15 Million).

  • Intelligent Transportation Systems.
  • Intermodal Transportation Facilities.
  • Highway Improvements on Publicly Owned Land.
