Highways for LIFE Extends Deadline for 2007 Project Applications

The Federal Highway Administration's (FHWA) Highways for LIFE (HfL) program has extended the deadline for submission of fiscal year (FY) 2007 demonstration construction project applications to January 30, 2007. An updated application form for FY 2007 is available on the HfL Web site at www.fhwa.dot.gov/hfl and at www.Grants.gov (click on "Find Grant Opportunities" and then search for "Highways for LIFE").

A State transportation department can apply for HfL funding for a highway project if the project constructs, reconstructs, or rehabilitates a route or connection on an eligible Federal-aid highway and uses innovative technologies, manufacturing processes, financing, or contracting methods. The innovative technology, process, or method must be one that the State has never before or rarely used and must meet performance goals for safety, congestion, and quality. The proposed innovations must also be available and ready for use.

The HfL funding allocated for a project may be up to 20 percent, but not more than $1 million, of the total project cost.

State departments of transportation should coordinate with their FHWA division office to submit an application. For more information, contact your local FHWA division office. For additional information about HfL, contact Mary Huie at FHWA, 202-366-3039 (email: mary.huie@fhwa.dot.gov), or visit www.fhwa.dot.gov/hfl.
