Pavement Preservation Training Now Online 24/7

Pavement preservation training online and at your convenience. The Federal Highway Administration's (FHWA) National Highway Institute (NHI) is now offering a free Web-based training course on pavement preservation designed for State and local highway agency personnel and contractors. The 6.5-hour course, Pavement Preservation Treatment Construction (Course No. FHWA-NHI-131110), introduces pavement preservation concepts and techniques and provides a solid foundation of knowledge on preservation practices. "The Web training is available at any time, so it is flexible to learners' schedules," says Jim Sorenson of FHWA's Office of Asset Management. "It is part of our continuing goal of providing technical tools to support the increased implementation of pavement preservation nationwide."

The Web training introduces pavement preservation concepts and techniques and provides a solid foundation of knowledge on preservation practices.

Using materials originally developed by the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans), FHWA worked with Perform Tech, a Web-based training contractor, to develop the course. The National Center for Pavement Preservation (NCPP) and the Foundation for Pavement Preservation also served as technical resources. The course covers project and treatment selection, including design and construction of the following treatments:

Crack filling and sealing.
Joint sealing.
Patching and edge repairs.
Chip seals.
Fog seals.
Slurry seals.
Microsurfacing.
Thin and ultra-thin overlays.

The course also introduces participants to the Pavement Preservation Treatment Construction Guide, which was created by FHWA, Caltrans, and NCPP. The guide covers basic pavement preservation concepts, as well as information on specific treatments to extend the life of asphalt pavements and how to best select a treatment.

To complement the new online NHI course on Pavement Preservation Treatment Construction, NHI is offering a 5-hour Webinar on Optimal Timing of Pavement Preservation Treatments (Course No. FHWA-NHI-131114). The free Webinar explores work performed under National Cooperative Highway Research Program Project 14-14, "Guide for Optimal Timing of Pavement Preventive Maintenance Treatment Applications," including the OPTime tool that was developed to help agencies determine the optimal time to apply a pavement preservation treatment. Topics also include characteristics of good pavement preservation programs, the collection of treatment performance data, and key cost and benefit considerations.

The target audience includes upper- and mid-level highway agency professionals who are responsible for pavement preservation programs and asset management decisionmaking. Sessions are currently scheduled for December 13 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. (eastern standard time) and December 19 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. (eastern standard time). Additional sessions may be scheduled for January, February, and March 2008. The sessions can be viewed individually on a desktop computer or broadcast to a small group.
