I very much appreciate the opportunity to speak before this audience this
morning.
The primary reason I became involved with SPIE several years ago was to try
to promote interdisciplinary information exchange and collaboration.
These series of symposia are unique in the diversity and quality of technical
disciplines represented and I am honored to have been asked to speak to you
today.
As Steve Doctor mentioned I work for the Federal Highway
Administration and my talk this morning will try present my vision of how
smart structures fit into the bigger picture of managing an aging highway
infrastructure.
