Figure 3-43: Flowchart.
Flowchart for assessing the condition of the concrete paste as applied to
MN-065-064. This flowchart from Volume 2 of the guidelines shows how to examine
the paste and air void system to determine if further evaluation of the aggregates
is required. For this site in Minnesota, examination of the paste and air void
system showed that the following conditions were present and ultimately led
to the examination of the aggregate:
- Cracks were present in the paste;
- No rust stains found around embedded items;
- Freeze-thaw can occur;
- The original unfilled air void system is adequate;
- The air void space factor was greater than 0.20 millimeters due to in-filling
suggesting that a possible paste freeze-thaw had occurred;
- The air void system in the concrete near the road surface was not judged
to be poor;
- Cracks did not extend through the aggregates into the paste;
- Cracks and/or voids were filled, which led to the need to identify the in-filling
material;
- Paste softening or degradation had occurred;
- No gypsum corrosion;
- Calcium hydroxide depletion occurred near the joints suggesting that a de-icer
attack had possibly occurred; and
- No gaps were found around the aggregates.
