Delivering Solutions for a World in Motion

New Training Course
NHI is pleased to introduce the course Hot Mix Asphalt Production Facilities (Course #13144). This new course is the collaborative effort of FHWA, the American Association of State and Highway Transportation Officials (AASHTO), and private industry. The course brings state inspectors and private plant owners and operators together to learn about the latest technology in plant production and, in this way, creates public-private partnerships.

Participants of the course Hot Mix Asphalt Production Facilities can expect to explore more effective methods in the production facility process and learn about the following topics: the types of plants, drying and heating systems, emission control systems, feeders and conveyor systems, storage systems, plant operation and maintenance, quality control, and quality assurance. The ultimate objective of this course is to improve plant operations, thereby improving the quality of the product that leaves the plant.

NHI will begin accepting requests for this course in April. For scheduling information, please visit our web site at http://www.nhi.fhwa.dot.gov or contact Lynn Cadarr, training program coordinator, at (703) 235-0528.

ITS Is Our Bag
This summer, NHI will begin delivering several courses on Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS). These courses, initially developed exclusively for U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) staff, will be redesigned by the Federal Highway Administration’s Joint Program Office (JPO) and NHI to ensure that the correct level of technical detail necessary is given to the target audience and the most effective instructional methods will be used to deliver the material to adult learners.

NHI coordinated and delivered the ITS courses because NHI has had a strong relationship with JPO, is an active participant in the ITS Capacity-Building Program, and already serves state DOTs, local governments, private industry, and international entities.

NHI staff members have written two articles about the implementation of ITS in Latin America that will be published in March. An article entitled “Developing ITS in Latin America” will appear in the magazine ITS World. Similarly, an article entitled “Implementing ITS in Latin America Requires a Radical Change” (ITS en America Latina — Un Cambio Radical) will be printed in Vial, an Argentinian magazine that covers highway-related events and commentary.
