Earthquake in the Kobe, Japan, area on Jan. 17, 1995,
have real relevance for the United States. The bridges
in central and eastern United States within the seismically
active New Madrid Zone are very similar to the types of
bridges in the Kobe area, 60 percent of which were damaged
by the earthquake. |
